Exercise

Exercising with type 1 diabetes can be a daunting task.  Questions such as: What should my starting blood sugar be before exercise?  How much insulin on board (“IOB”) should I have before starting a workout?  What type of workouts are better for T1Ds?  all percolate for new T1Ds.  The short answer: everyone is different.  However, here are some general guidelines to get you started:

  • Prior to Exercise:  Drink 20 – 30 grams of carbohydrates.

  • Target blood sugar pre-exercise: 120 – 150.

  • While Working Out:  Keep glucose near you in the event your blood sugar drops below 80 – 100.
